8.2 – End of the Night

First broadcast 13/14 September, 2009.

Boyd re-opens the Gemma Morrison case after the woman herself attempts to commit suicide. Gemma was raped and her younger brother was murdered by two men working together as a team, and when one is identified, it doesn’t take long to find the other. When the investigation is interrupted, however, Gemma takes matters into her own hands…

8.3 – Substitute

First broadcast 20/21 September, 2009.

Discovering her hydrophobic lover Stefan has multiple passports, Eve becomes suspicious enough to test his DNA and discovers it’s linked to the rape and murder of an aid worker. Initially believing Stefan is involved in people smuggling, the team soon discover the truth is much darker and more terrifying – putting Eve in serious danger.

The one where… despite uncovering an illegal human organ harvesting business, the team ultimately don’t have the physical evidence required to charge Stefan… so Boyd leaves him to face rough justice from the criminal colleagues he betrayed. Also, Game of Thrones fans are free to squee over Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle) getting far too friendly with Selyse Baratheon (Tara Fitzgerald).

8.4 – Endgame

First broadcast 27/28 September, 2009.

Boyd’s old adversary Linda Cummings sends him a gift from the secure hospital where she is incarcerated – a severed human finger. With Spencer having moved to CID and Grace apparently away at a conference, the depleted team attempt to investigate a possible murder without allowing themselves to be manipulated by the ever-cunning Linda.

The one where… Ruth Gemmell makes her third WtD appearance (her second as Linda Cummings), Spencer temporarily leaves the team, Grace quietly takes herself off to hospital for an operation and possible chemotherapy but is then abducted by Linda, and Boyd offers to sacrifice his own life to save Grace’s.
